KIAC offers and supports local community arts education through outreach programs, courses, and workshops that are developed and implemented to meet the broad range of community interests.

Current Courses

Scottish Country Dancing with Chris Collins
Mondays 7-9pm in the KIAC Ballroom
8 classes, March 12-April 30th

Free Introductory Class Monday, March 5th

Scottish Country Dancing is the ballroom dance of Scotland and is similar to Jigging and Square Dancing. This lively, social dance is a great way to have fun and get exercise and the 5 basic steps can be learned in 10 minutes. Come on your own or bring a partner. Instructor Chris Collins is certified with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and has been teaching for 15 years.

 

Life Drawing
7-9pm on the 1st & 3rd Mondays of every month
In the 2D Studio at the Yukon School of Visual Arts
$5 Drop-in fee

Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a relaxed evening of drawing from a live model. Classes will commence with a brief demonstration and instruction for anyone interested. Drawing Boards and basic drawing tools will be provided, paper available for purchase.


Adult Jazz/Hip Hop Dance Classes with Katie Pearse
Tuesdays 7-8pm
in the KIAC Ballroom
8 classes, February 28-April 17

$65+gst *pre-registration required

Katie Pearse is inviting you to come out and try this adult jazz/hip hop class.
The class will start with an invigorating warm up that includes stretching and toning, following that you'll learn basic dance steps and then have the chance to put it all together with upbeat choreography. All this is done to great music with an experienced instructor. This is a laid back class where all levels of experience are welcome. All that's needed is stretchy, comfortable clothing, a water bottle and a good attitude.

 

Creative Quilting Workshop with Marion Dale
Saturday 10-4pm February 25, March 3 & 10
$77+gst *pre-registration required

Working from a photograph for inspiration, participants will use hand sewing and quilting techniques to create a unique 16x20 quilted art piece. Instructor Marion Dale has over 50 years of experience with sewing and needlework and has extensive experience teaching and sharing this passion with others.

All levels are welcome to attend this workshop, previous experience is not required.

 

Painting Drop-in
Saturday 1pm - 4pm in the KIAC Classroom (enter through the ODD Gallery)
$5 drop-in fee for materials

Saturday Painting Drop-in has started up again and welcomes adults of all ages! Inspire and be inspired by other artists. Bring your own ideas and painting surfaces. Paints, brushes, easels and drawing materials will be supplied.

 

Dance Classes with Katie Pearse
10 Lessons beginning Thursday, February 2nd

3:15-3:45 Mini Movement/Pre-Ballet (3-4) $77
3:45-4:30 Tiny Tutus and Tights (5-7) $86
4:30-5:15 Ballet/Jazz (8-12) $86

Mini Movement/Pre-Ballet (ages 3-4) Through movement games, stories and songs, children will have a chance to learn more about their bodies from the fun perspective of dance.

Tiny Tutu's and Tights/Pre-Ballet (ages 5-7) See your child's confidence grow as they learn basic dance skills through fun and innovative ways.  A short dance will be learned and performed on the last day of classes. 

Ballet/Jazz (ages 8-12) Students will be introduced to the basics of ballet and jazz in a fun atmosphere, in ways that hope to instill a love for dance.  

 

Beginner Orchestra with Joe Cooke
Wednesdays 7-9 pm
8 sessions February 1 - March 21

This is a beginner level wind and string ensemble with weekly rehearsals. Emphasis will be on skills required to play in an orchestra, following a conductor, working with other players, phrasing and sectional work. Participants should have a basic level of understanding of how to read music and technique required for their instruments. All ages welcome.

 

Piano Lessons with “Barnacle” Bob Hilliard
Sundays 10:30-2:30 beginning January 21

Learn to play jazz, pop, rock or classical piano with a combination of classical training and playing by ear. The improvisational skills and theory learned in these classes can be applied to any instrument.

 

Guitar Lessons with Holly Haustein
4-6:30 beginning January 18
8 1/2 hour lessons

All ages welcome. Students will not learn music theory, but instead focus on the joy of making music and discovering their own style.

 

Music Lessons with Kristen Poenn
Mondays & Tuesdays 4:15-6:45
8 week session begins mid January
$138 - FULL

New SOVA student Kristen Poenn is a classically trained pianist with a BA in music, honours in piano performance, and has been a private piano, violin and music theory teacher for the past 6 years. Kristen is offering private 30 min lessons in all levels of piano or beginner violin.
